Miriam bat Mordecai

Miriam bat Mordecai

Miriam bat Mordecai is a character in "The Roman Mysteries" series of children's historical novels by Caroline Lawrence. She is the sister of Jonathan, one of three friends of Flavia, the protagonist of the series.

Appearance

Miriam has dark silken curls, smooth pale skin and wide violet eyes. She is extremely attractive, described as, "The most beautiful girl Flavia had ever seen", and many men fall in love with her, not always to her liking. When Flavia comforts her after witnessing a fight between Aristo and Pliny the Younger Miriam reveals that she despises her appearance as men become infatuated with her on looks alone and that she hates not being able to go anywhere without men leering over her.

Family

Miriam is the eldest daughter of Mordecai and Susannah the beautiful and the older sister of Jonathan. She also has cousins on the other side of Ostia. Whilst visiting Pompei, Miriam fell in love with Flavia's uncle Gaius in "The Secrets of Vesuvius" but admitted to Flavia and Nubia that she was not sure if she really loved him now that his wealth and his flourishing farm had been destroyed in the Vesuvius Eruption much to the sorrow of Gaius. However Miriam soon realised her love for Flavia's uncle was genuine and married him in "The Twelve tasks of Flavia Gemina".

Personality

Miriam is very loving and kind-hearted and shares a close and affectionate relationship with her family. She is a good assistant to her father and attends to his patients whilst he is unable to be there himself. She is also a good cook and is always there to help people. To Miriam, family and friends are very important.

Death

Unfortunately, in "The Slave-girl from Jerusalem" Jonathan has premonitions of death, which turn out to be premonitions of Miriam's funeral, as she dies giving birth to twin baby boys. Mordecai did all he could to persuade Miriam to allow him to save her life and that her babies' positions in the world were wrong. Miriam refuses and forces her father into making a vow that he will save her babies at any cost. Miriam gives her life so that her children will live and dies shortly after childbirth. She arranges for two of her friends to be nursemaids. It is revealled in her will that Miriam knew she would die as she too had premonitions of angels who would take her to Paradise so that she may watch her sons grow and live happy lives. She leaves all her worldly goods to her husband and the note that she will love him forever.
