Goguryeo was an ancient kingdom located in southernManchuria (present-dayNortheast China ), southern Russian Maritime province, and the northern and central parts of theKorean peninsula . Goguryeo developed into an ancient state in the first century and expanded its power in the region. In the time ofTaejo of Goguryeo in 53, five local tribes were reorganized into five centrally ruled districts of the kingdom. Foreign relations and the military were controlled by the king. It was one of theThree Kingdoms of Korea , along withBaekje andSilla , and it is also considered an important regional kingdom in Manchuria by thePeople's Republic of China . In the Goguryeo-Han Wars Taejo successfully expanded Goguryeo by attacking Han China's commanderies of
Lelang , Xiantu, and Liaodong in the Korean and Liaodong peninsulas, becoming fully independent from the Han commanderies.
