Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons

The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons or RACDS is a professional college established in 1965 that administers Fellowship Exams for both general and specialist dental practitioners in the Australasian region. The RACDS was established to promote high standards of postgraduate education in the dental profession, and to recognize general dental practitioners and specialists who have undertaken postgraduate training. Successful completion of college examinations may lead to Fellowship in the College (FRACDS) and/or may be used for licensure purposes.

Fellowship may be awarded in the following streams:

1. General Stream.

2. Special Field Streams - Endodontics, Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral Medicine, Special Needs Dentistry.

A newer category of Membership of the College (MRACDS) has recently been created by the college. Membership may be awarded in either general or special field streams.

The RACDS has criticized the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS) as being an "exclusive club." [citation|url=http://www.newstext.com.au/docs/DTM/2004/get.jsp?docid=DTM-20041117-1-009-4202759V8@NSW-METRO-2004-2003|title= `Club' run by the few at a cost to many|publisher=Daily Telegraph|date= June 12, 2006] This criticism was levelled by the RACDS partly because the RACS has previously refused to establish a conjoint fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS). The RACDS believes a conjoint fellowship would expand training opportunities for OMS trainees and thus benefit the public.
