Alpha Rho Upsilon (ΑΡΥ; usually pronounced ARU) was a fraternity at Bowdoin College from 1946 until it was disbanded in 1990. An offshoot of the earlier Thorndike Club, ARU was founded in reaction to the exclusion of Jewish students from the other campus fraternities at the time. The letters ARU stand for "All Races United," and they lived up to their name by, for example, sponsoring a Japanese student in 1951. [Portland Press Herald May 3, 1951] Like all (college sanctioned) fraternities at Bowdoin it was coeducational since 1971 when women were first admitted to Bowdoin.
