Sommer signed his first professional contract with his local side,
FC Basel , in 2005. He became the first choice goalkeeper in the Under-21 squad almost immedietly, fending off opposition likeJayson Leutwiler andOrkan Avci , and was third choice for the senior squad behindFranco Costanzo andLouis Crayton . In Summer 2007, he signed a new contract until 2011 and was loaned out toLiechtenstein er clubFC Vaduz to gain first-team experience in an enviroment somewhat more competetive than the Reserves League. He was made the first-choice goalkeeper and played 33 matches over the course of the 2007/08 season, playing a major part in Vaduz's promotion to theSwiss Super League from the Challenge League. Sommer's loan deal was extended for another season in Summer 2008, lasting until the end of the 2008/09 season.He has represented Switzerland at various age levels including Under-16's, Under-19's and Under-21's.
