Dennis Nielsen is a retired United States Air Force Colonel and was a Democratic candidate for Governor of North Carolina in 2008.[1] Nielsen was part of the rescue effort of the United Airlines Flight 232 crash in Sioux City, Iowa in 1989.
In 2004, Nielsen ran as a Republican against state Sen. A. B. Swindell.[2] His 2008 run for Governor, however, was as a conservative Democrat.
Nielsen came in third in the Democratic primary on May 6, 2008, with about 4 percent of the vote.[3]

Issues
Property Tax for Seniors
Nielsen advocates the elimination of property tax for senior citizens who are at least 65 years old, own and occupy their own homes, and have an annual adjusted gross income of less than $40,000.[4]
Education
Nielsen plans to reward parents who home-school and encourage some phasing out of the public school system to be replaced by private schools.[5]
Government by the People
Nielsen also advocates the creation of citizen groups, on 60 day terms, to help improve the government.[6]
