He rode for the factoryRepsol Honda Grand Prix team in 2001 and 2002, finishing 3rd overall behind team-mateValentino Rossi in 2002, with a win atPhakisa inSouth Africa . Prior to this, he had a long 250cc career. He was runner-up to Rossi in the 1999 World Championship standings, and top five overall every other year from 1996 to 2000.
