"Crash & Burn" is the seventeenth episode in the of the popular American crime drama "", which is set in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Plot Summary

Sara, Catherine and Warrick investigate a deadly car crash where an elderly woman drove a car right into the front of a popular restaurant. Sara is happy to see her boyfriend, paramedic Hank, on the scene. Warrick and Catherine rule out a sun-blinding accident. The cops find out most of the dead and injured patrons were from a medical insurance company located nearby, and Sara finds out one of the minor injuries is a young woman whose boyfriend is--Hank. Doc Robbins' autopsy reveals the elderly woman was dying of cancer, and the cops learn her grandson programmed the car's GPS locator with the insurance company's address, where she planned to crash into the company because they were deliberately refusing to pay for treatment that would have saved her life. The company can't be held liable, the woman's plans to give insurance money to her grandson are ruined because she committed suicide, and Sara briefly confronts an ashamed Hank before making it clear she's through with him.

Meanwhile Grissom and Nick find out that the death of a woman who died of carbon monoxide poisoning was not an accident. The woman's husband, a man being driven towards exhaustion and bankruptcy because his small hardware parts store can't compete with the big chains, was the real target of the plan from his brilliant but unhinged son. The son was accepted into Princeton, but his family could neither pay for his tuition nor qualify for financial aid, so he planned to kill his father and earn the insurance money. But his father had recently stopped smoking, which meant the carbon monoxide exposure made him ill but did not kill him.
