Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, popularly known as SJCE, located in Mysore, is an autonomous engineering college . It is governed by the Grant-in-Aid rules of the Government of Karnataka.

History

Beginnings

Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering was started in the year 1963, which was inaugurated by Dr. T. M. A. Pai, who was the then Chairman of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Initially it was under the auspices of the JSS Mahavidyapeetha, with the inspiration of His Holiness Jagadguru Lingaikya Dr Sri Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamigalavaru of Suttur Matt. Courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering branches were started first. In 1968 the first batch of Students as Engineering Graduates came out.

Over The Years

SJCE was the first college in Karnataka to introduce Electronics and Communication branch of engineering in the year 1968. Bachelor's degree programs in Instrumentation in the year 1978, Computer Science and Engineering during 1982, Information Science and Engineering in the year 2000, were subsequently introduced. Many Undergraduate and Post Graduate courses were also started. JSS International Institute Of Professional Studies

Established in 1998 with the objective of helping JSS Students who are planning to go abroad for further studies. JSS IIPS is a recognized center of Edexcel, London to offer Edexcel courses in India. JSS IIPS is offering National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) courses of Edexcel. Mahavidyapeetha has entered into an agreement with University of Teesside, Middlesbrough, UK and University of West Virginia, USA for transfer of students. ND and HND completed students can join UK or USA Universities to pursue their studies further

Facilities

Library And Information Centre

The centre is equipped with over 70,000 volumes relalted to Science and Engineering, Encyclopaedias, Dictionaries, Hand Books, Data Books etc. and over a hundred magazines and journals every month. It also has a collection of ISI specifications, Project Reports and Dissertations, Doctoral Thesis and Proceedings of Conferences and Monographs. It also provides audio visual facilities, photo copying facilities, book bank facilities etc.

Auditorium

SJCE's auditorium Hall, located on one side of the staff room besides the civil engineering deparrtment, can accommodate 300 people. Complete with Videorama, Slide Projector, LCD & Overhead Projector, Sound System etc., it is used for seminars, meetings, group use of audiovisual material, etc.

Physical Education

A standard football, hockey, cricket ground, basketball court, tennis court, and volleyball courts have been maintained by the Department of Physical Education. Outdoor and indoor recreation facility is available both during and after college hours, in its sports complex building. College's sports council also conducts annual sport events every year. Inter collegiate and VTU Tournaments are also organized.

Hostels

The College has separate hostel facilities for about 500 boys and 210 girls. The boys' hostel is located in the college premises, in several blocks namely the H Block, L Block, M Block, PG Block and the GH Block all located on the north-end of the campus. The hostel runs a mess. A separate TV room and reading room are provided in the Boys' Hostel. The girls hostel is also located on the south-end of the campus.

Health Care

A Health Care Unit has been provided on the campus with a qualified physician. The centre is supported with necessary equipment and medicines. The centre works between 10.00 a.m and 2.00 p.m on all working days.

cholarships and Awards

SJCE offers scholarships and awards to deserved and eligible students for their future education and benefits based on their performance. The eligible students can apply for fee concession/scholarship in the prescribed application form available in the scholarship section. The college has instituted Medals and Cash awards several endowment scholarships are also available.

cience and Technology Entrepreneurs Park

The college has evolved an innovative programme called Product Development Centre. This centre identifies some of the students’ projects, which are commercially viable and develop them into prototypes and test for reliability. The product is offered to the students, employees or even outsiders for being commercially exploited.

SJCE-STEP - The SJCE Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park was established with the sponsorship of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI), Department of Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka and Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering. Some of the activities of STEP are in the areas of Entrepreneurship Development Programmes, Technology Transfer, Mass Employment Generation through Science and Technology, Information Centre etc. SJCE-STEP is one of the first 3 STEPs and has been accredited as the BEST STEP among the 14 STEPs established across the country. STEP SJCE provides services in the areas of Entrepreneurship, Skill Development, Consultancy and Continuing Education Programmes.

Innovative projects such as industrial design of a small Electronic Exchange equipment, cordless microphone, electronic choke for fluorescent lamps have been successfully completed. In collaboration with the Community Polytechnic, STEP is engaged in technology transfer to rural areas. About 350 smokeless chulas have been installed, besides putting up several biogas plants.

The Information Centre established by STEP offers its membership to industries. Reference volume standards, different types of Hand Books, Information on Industrial Policy, Industrial licensing etc., are available. Besides these, a computer data bank on Expert resources, Manufacturers Index, Supplier Index, etc. has established to cater to the members. The Information Centre is hooked up to the National Informatics Center Network through a NICNET terminal. The SJCE-STEP is now establishing a Quality Assurance Centre, in order to cater to the growing requirements of local Industries.

Extra Curricular Activities

The college has one of the best quiz clubs - "The Greycells" in Karnataka Fact|date=November 2007 . The club was started by Jayanth Munipalli & Akshay Bharadwaj in 1999. The weekly quiz, (conducted till date) 'WeKuiz' is a huge hit. The SJCE students have twice won (2001 and 2003) the Times of India Ascent Quiz conducted by the Times Group in addition to numerous other intercollegiate quizzes held in and around the cityFact|date=November 2007 . The college IEEE and CSI branches, wholly managed by the students are the most active student branches of the 2 organizations in the whole of the state of KarnatakaFact|date=November 2007 .

IEEE-SJCE and CSI-SJCE chapters conduct several weekly events ranging from aptitude and technical tests to workshops, which greatly benefit the student. They also conduct annual technical fests which are attended by students from around the nation. The IEEE-SJCE conducts 2 fests, Tuxedo - A technical fest/symposium conducted during the odd semester and Cyberia - A technical /cultural fest during the even semester. The CSI conducts it's annual technical/cultural fest, Technologix during the even semester. A pure technical symposium to be conducted by the CSI during the odd semester is well in the pipeline. The official college magazine editorial board, "JC ED" is very active and keeps churning out creative masterpieces year after yearFact|date=November 2007 . Their recent release had the name 'JayZine'(2007) and was a beacon of creativity and imagination. They also organize a yearly literary extravaganza called 'Shabd'. The college's annual fest 'Jayciana' is one of the popular student events in the stateFact|date=November 2007 .
