St Joseph's School, Bhagalpur, Bihar, India, is a well known English Medium School at Bhagalpur. It is associated with the ICSE board of education. It was established in 1983 by Rt. Rev Urban Mc Garry, the first Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Bhagalpur.

The current principal is Fr. Varghese Panangatt. The school, managed and maintained by the Catholic Diocese of Bhagalpur, has explicit mission of training young minds to acquire integrated personality, to become useful, loyal and alert citizen of India and to serve as an active agents of India's socio-economic transformation.

At present the school is equipped with a basketball court, a huge games field, a fully air-conditioned computer lab and three science labs.

The motto of the school is Excellence, Virtue and Discipline.

History

His Lordship Rt. Rev Urban Mc Garry, the first Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Bhagalpur decided to start an English Medium Co-Education school in Bhagalpur on 15th November 1982 and invited Sisters of St. Ann of Providence from Secunderabad as a core team to assist him in the task.

On 2nd February,1983, Bishop Mc Garry blessed and inaugurated the new school with L.K.G and U.K.G classes. Fr. Varghese Panangatt, Ph.D. was appointed as the principal of the school and Fr. Joseph Thanniparampil as its Secretary. Srs. Alice, Loretta and Joyce joined as first teaching staff with other teachers.

The school received No Objection Certificate from the Government of Bihar on 11.05.92 and later got affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi on Provisional basis, on 30.09.92. Finally, the school received permanent Affiliation on 17th January, 1997.

The Senior Secondary (Plus Two) Section of School was inaugurated on 5th July, 2005 under ISC curriculum with commerce and science streams. The first batch of Plus two students appeared in 2007 board examination.

Campus

The St. Joseph's campus is located on the outskirts of Bhagalpur(on the way to Nathnagar). The campus is divided into clusters of buildings. The academic area chiefly comprises the Kinder Garden Section, Primary Section, Senior Section and Higher Secondary(+2) section.

The institute has football and cricket grounds; and basketball and volleyball courts. An open-air theatre and a Stadium with permanent Stage help the students to stage any Cultural Programme at any time. A well-furnished auditorium with a modern lighting and sound system and with an accommodation strength of about 1000 people is also available.

To widen the knowledge of students, a Fossil Garden, a Herbal Garden, an Aquatic Garden and a Greenhouse are also constructed on the School Campus. Besides, the aquatic garden, residential accommodation for Principal, Rev. Sisters, and Lady Teachers is also available.

Houses

The students are divided into four houses. They are Astros (red), Biogens (yellow), Marines (blue) and Terrestrians (green). Competition between the houses takes place in the form of interhouse activities like quizzing, debating, athletics, drama, and elocution. Meritorious houses are awarded house points and the house with the most points at the end of the year wins the prestigious House cup.The house of Astros holds the glory of winning the most annual events.However,the house of terrestrians is regarded as the most vibrant and disciplined house.

Activities and awards

The school has a wide spectrum of co-curricular activities which receives as much importance as the academic disciplines. Through this extensive range of activities, the students are exposed to varying situations and issues. They regularly participate in Inter-School Competitions at the local, State, National and occasionally at the International levels.

The scholastic, the intra- and the extramural programmes of St. Joseph's are geared to nurturing academic excellence, independent and creative thought, the tapping of diverse talents, leadership training and a deep commitment to community service.
