refnum=93001620Fort Orange ( _nl. Fort Oranje) was the first permanent Dutch settlement in
New Netherland . It was a replacement for Fort Nassau, which had been built on a nearby Castle Island in theHudson River and which served as a trading post until1617 or1618 , when it was abandoned due to frequent flooding. Both forts were named in honor of the Dutch House of Orange-Nassau.Fort Orange was a small wooden structure, erected in
1624 by theDutch West India Company as a furtrading post on the west bank of the Hudson River. It became the company's official outpost in the upperHudson Valley , similar to the company's many other headquarters throughout their worldwide trading empire. In
1664 , when the English took control of New Netherland, Fort Orange was renamedFort Albany . When the stockade was rebuilt on State Street hill in1676 , it was renamedFort Frederick .
