Margie Planton

Margie Planton (born Margaret Farmer on February 13 1949) is an American politician of the Democratic party who served as mayor of Chillicothe, Ohio, and as a member of the Chillicothe city council in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Education

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, she received a bachelor's degree from Beloit College in 1971. In 1975, she earned a master's degree in public policy administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Planton moved to Chillicothe in June 1979 and the next year she began working in the Victim's Witness Program.

Political career

In 1989, Planton was elected to the Chillicothe city council from the city's third ward. She was elected to three terms on the council. In 1992, she was an unsuccessful candidate for county recorder of Ross County, Ohio. In 1995, the city council chose Planton to be the council's president.

In 1997, Chillicothe mayor Joe Sulzer was appointed to a vacant seat in the Ohio House of Representatives. On March 26 1997 the council appointed Planton to fill out Sulzer's mayoral term. In November 1999, Planton was elected in her own right to the mayoralty, defeating three challengers.

After Sulzer lost his bid for re-election to the legislature in 2002, he returned to challenge Planton in the 2003 Democratic primary and won with seventy three percent of the vote.

Private life

Planton's husband, Stanley Planton, is head librarian at the Chillicothe branch campus of Ohio University.
