5 Live Sport

5 Live Sport

5 Live Sport (formerly known as Sport on 5) is the flagship sports programme on BBC Radio Five Live. It broadcasts daily, 7pm - 10pm Monday - Friday, Saturdays from 12 noon usually till 6, until which 6-0-6 begins at six minutes past six, hence the name. However due to the increased amount of 5.15 kick offs, Five Live Sport has been sometimes pushed back to 7.15. On Sundays, it broadcasts from 1pm till 6. The regular presenters are Mark Saggers (Mon-Thur), Mark Pougatch (Fri,Sat) and Eleanor Oldroyd (Sun).

Origins

Five Live Sport has evolved from the Saturday afternoon radio sports anthology show Sport on 2 which started on BBC Radio 2 around 1970 and then transferred over as Sport on 5 on BBC Radio 5 in 1990 and BBC Radio Five Live since 1994. The show featured the major sports events each Saturday afternoon with updates from the major footballing fixtures and second half commentary on a top match. The location of the commentary game would usually be revealed around 3pm. Sports Report followed Sport on 2/Sport on 5 at 5pm.

Television now has more influence on sporting fixtures and kick-off times which meant that the format of Sport on 5 has had to evolve to keep pace with all the major sporting events. Whilst its television equivalent Grandstand was cancelled after 48 years, Sport on 5, which was renamed "Five Live Sport" in 2006, has survived and thrived. It has been extended to be broadcast several nights per week in addition to its traditional Saturday afternoon transmissions.

Current format

For the large part of the season, football is the main sport broadcast. Five Live Sport during the week will consist of sports chat and debate, such as the Debating Chamber and the Monday Night Club. If there is football during the week, such as UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, mid-week Premiership, Carling Cup, Championship games or international matches, then they will be broadcast. However, news concerning many other sports will be aired. On Saturdays, there can be 3 matches that can be heard in full, i.e Premiership kick-offs at 12.45, 3.00 and 5.15 (Depending on importance of game, 5.15 game might not be aired). At 3 o'clock, there will be a main commentary at one of the games, yet their will be constant contributions and updates from all the other premiership games, some Championship games and one or two games from Scotland, while games from the lower leagues are constantly monitored. Then after the games end, Sports Report at 5pm will then summarize the days action and get reaction from managers and players. Sundays may then have one or two Premiership games, one at 2.00, then one at 4.00. This however varies depending on the UEFA Cup the previous Thursday.

As well as football, any sport which broadcasts on Five Live goes under the Five Live Sport banner. Exceptions to these are sports events which either occur all day, such as The Open golf championship, Wimbledon tennis championship, or those which happen in the middle of the night, like the American Football Super Bowl. See BBC Radio Five Live for a full list.
