USS "Caracara" (AMc-40), an Accentor-class minesweeper commissioned by the
U.S. Navy for use duringWorld War II , was named after thecaracara , a large South Americanhawk .World War II operations
"Caracara" was launched on
23 August 1941 by the Bristol Yacht Building Co., SouthBristol, Maine . She was placed in service on30 December 1941 , and after training with Experimental Minesweeping Group, Mine Warfare School, reported to the10th Naval District where she engaged inminesweeping activities around theWest Indies . She was stricken from theNavy Register on21 January 1946 .References
