Makriotika

Makriotika is one of the three municipal communities of the Pilaros region located on the slopes of Mount Agia Dinati. The village's main square has a fountain and gives panoramic views over the whole of the Pilaros valley. Many ruins from the 1953 earthquake can still been seen in the gardens of current traditional properties and along the narrow roads within the village. The villagers of Makriotika always have an abundance of colour in their gardens as well as in pots and containers on their patios. Many gardens boast lemon trees, mandarine trees and vines, as well as honeysuckle and jasmine. Wild sage and lavender are abundant on the roadside and within some of the old ruined houses. A memorial garden a few yards down the road from the square has recently been completed in remembrance of the local war heroes. Makriotika village has a tavern, supermarket with a butcher shop, and a school. The butcher rears his own organic meat on his well-stocked farm in the mountains. There is also a small ironwork shop and a carpenter shop. One of the local bakeries is still making traditional bread with superb taste. Within the community area of Makriotika there are two petrol stations, supermarkets, another ironworks shop, coffee shop, bakeries, cheesemakers, and auto mechanics. During the summer months, there are many apartments, studios and rooms to let. A regular bus service operates to the village from Agia Efimia.
