Born in
Sendai , Peter Doi was baptized at age 9, onApril 21 ,1902 . He studied at theseminary in Sendai and thePontifical Urbaniana University inRome before being ordained to the priesthood onMay 1 ,1921 . Doi then did pastoral work in Sendai until 1934, when he was madeSecretary of the Apostolic Delegation toJapan .On
December 2 ,1937 , Doi was appointed Archbishop of Tokyo byPope Pius XI . He received his episcopal consecration onFebruary 13 ,1938 from Archbishop Jean-Alexis Chambon, MEP, with Bishops Paul Aijiro Yamaguchi and Marie-Joseph Lemieux serving as co-consecrators. DuringWorld War II , Doi served asExecutive Director of the National Catholic Central Committee. He wasApostolic Administrator of Yokohama from 1945 to 1947.Pope John XXIII created him Cardinal Priest of "S. Antonio da Padova in Via Merulana" in theconsistory ofMarch 28 ,1960 . Doi, hoped by the Vatican to enliven the Church in Japan [TIME Magazine. He is buried in St. Mary's Cathedral.
