Potter Street is a small street in Brunswick, Maine between Maine Street and Union Street. Even though it is only one block long and has less than twenty houses, it has had and currently has significant residents.
Joshua Chamberlain
Joshua Chamberlain, an American Civil War general and 32nd governor of Maine, lived on Potter Street in what has become known as the Joshua Chamberlain House. Chaimberlain's house was originally on Potter Street. He then had his house moved to the lot next door on the corner of Potter Street and Maine Street. It was turned to face Maine Street and became officially on Maine Street.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow lived in a room in what would later become known as the Joshua Chaimberlain House on Potter Street. Chaimberlain left that room the way it was when Longfellow lived in it and Longfellow later stayed in it during a college reunion.
Angus King
Angus King, 72nd governor of Maine, currently lives on Potter Street.
