Author-it (formerly AuthorIT) is a
Content management system which is intended to be used by anyone responsible for creating, maintaining, and distributing content. The foundation of Author-it resides in its ability to single-source content thereby eliminating redundancy and streamlining content. While Author-it is often referred to as ahelp authoring tool , its underlying approach to single sourcing can be applied to any industry.Author-it can produce documentation in the following formats:
*RTF,PDF , orMicrosoft Word format for printed documentation
*Microsoft WinHelp (Windows Help)
*Microsoft HTML Help
*Sun JavaHelp
*Oracle Help for Java
*Web and browser based help
*XML
*DITAAuthor-it stores all information as objects in a central
database , giving authors the ability to combine and reuse objects in various ways. Object types include:

*topics
*file objects
*hyperlink s
*styles
*glossaries
*tables of contents
*indexesBecause content consists of independent objects, multiple authors can work in the central database (called a library) at the same time.
Author-it can be licenced as either Desktop, Workgroup, or Enterprise editions. Further modules that can be licenced include:

The current version is 5.1, however, because of widely-reported bugginess with version 5.x, some users continue to use the less feature-rich version 4.5.
