Born in
Morocco , Besson's mother is fromLebanon and his father was a flight instructor in theFrench Air Force , killed in flight within three months after Éric's birth. At 17, he came back to France and studied in the "École supérieure de commerce" ofMontpellier , then in theInstitut d'études politiques de Paris .Besson joined the French car company,
Renault , then worked for "Challenges ", a business monthly, before joining theVivendi foundation.He was a member of the Socialist Party from 1993 to 2007; he is mayor of
Donzère since 1995 and was "député" ofDrôme from 1997 to 2007 (he was no longer candidate).He began the
2007 French presidential election as a member ofSégolène Royal 's campaign team, but defected, proclaiming that he felt the Socialist campaign's economics to be deeply flawed.Besson is married to
Sylvie Brunel , a geographist, andwriter , former president ofAction Against Hunger and they have three children. Their eldest child, Alexandra (born 1989), is a novelist under the pen name "Ariane Fornia", and published her first book, "Dieu est une femme" ("God is a woman") in 2005.Notes and references
