Garth Steek is a politician, lawyer, and businessman in Winnipeg,
Manitoba ,Canada .Steek has a
Bachelor of Arts degree from theUniversity of Winnipeg and a law degree from theUniversity of Manitoba . He left the legal practice to join his family's business, Steek’s Fine Furniture, in Winnipeg.In
1995 Steek was elected toWinnipeg City Council , beating incumbentSandy Hyman , in theRiver Heights Ward. Steek was re-elected in1998 and2002 .In 2002, Steek announced he would not seek re-election as a Councillor and would instead run for
Mayor of Winnipeg againstMayor Glen Murray . He later withdrew from the race for Mayor, claiming he could not beat Murray. He then ran for re-election in River Heights, winning by acclamation.When Murray resigned as Mayor in mid-term in
2004 , Steek ran in the municipalby-election to replace him. He placed a distant fifth, losing toSam Katz . Near the end of the race, some of his supporters indicated that he had given up and was quietly assisting Katz's campaign.Steek is currently president of the Manitoba Home Builders Association.
