Capitol Land Trust

Capitol Land Trust (CLT) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit conservation organization based in Olympia, Washington. CLT was formed in 1987 by a group of citizens in South Puget Sound who were concerned about the rapid uncontrolled growth in the area.

Mission Statement

Capitol Land Trust is dedicated to furthering collaborative and strategic [conservation of southwest Washington’s essential natural areas.

CLT seeks to maintain the coexistence of people, animals and the natural habitats that sustain us all, by working with groups and individuals at the local level to protect and conserve important lands. CLT’s efforts are community based, locally supported and economically beneficial. By working cooperatively, and with support from its members and the community, Capitol Land Trust protects the natural environment by offering landowners non-regulatory alternatives. As of April 2007 CLT has protected 2,516 acres of natural areas in the South Puget Sound region.

CLT is governed by a board of directors who oversee the work of three full-time staff. The board is led by an executive committee made up of board officers (president, vice president, treasurer and secretary) and the executive director. Seven standing committees help the Trust meet its mission.

CLT’s primary goals are:
# Protect marine shorelines and estuaries
# Protect peninsular riparian areas and wetlands
# Protect riparian and prairie habitat in the Black River and Scatter Creek watersheds
# Protect oak woodlands in and prairie habitat
