- Software Update Services
Software Update Services (SUS) is a tool for centralizing the update of
Microsoft Windows systems in a network, developed byMicrosoft . [http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/updateservices/evaluation/previous/faq.mspx] SUS works on a server anddownload s updates for the specified versions of Windows from the remoteWindows Update site, operated by Microsoft. The clients can then download updates from this internal server, rather than connecting directly to Windows Update. This simplifies the management of updates and saves bandwidth.SUS has been superseded by
Windows Server Update Services , which use the same principles but allow updating of different Microsoft products, not only Windows.Support for SUS by Microsoft was originally planned to end on December 6, 2006 [http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/updateservices/evaluation/previous/default.mspx] , but based on user feedback, the date was extended to July 10, 2007 [http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=194400595] .
An alternative tool for distributing updates and software to Windows systems is the
Microsoft Systems Management Server , designed for use in large networks.
