Illinois 171 follows Cumberland Avenue south of Chicago, becomes 1st Avenue until it crosses the
Cal-Sag Channel ,Illinois and Michigan Canal , andDes Plaines River . It then follows Archer Avenue and parallels the river along the eastern bank until it terminates in Joliet.Illinois Route 53 is the road that follows the river for some time on the western bank.Route 171 is the main north-south road connecting important locations such as the

SBI Route 171 was established in
1924 , and ran from Thomson toIllinois Route 78 , along what is now called the Argo-Fay Route. In 1946, the modern Illinois 171 was designated from Lyons atU.S. Route 34 to Summit. This route was then extended twice; south to Joliet in 1968 to replace Illinois Route 4A and north toIllinois Route 72 at the Chicago/Park Ridge border in 1998 to yield the current route.Major intersections
