Shout band "Shout was a Christian
glam metal band formed in 1987 byKen Tamplin . Musically the band was similar toStryper , but the "Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music" cites them as being "more competent than Stryper".cite book |last=Powell |first=Mark Allan |title=Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music |year=2002 |publisher=Hendrickson Publishers |location=Peabody,Massachusetts |isbn=1-56563-679-1 |edition=First printing |chapter=Shout |pages=821-822]Background
Their first album, "It Won't Be Long", was recorded by session musicians. These included
Lanny Cordola (of Magdalen), Marty Friedman (ofMegadeth ), Michael Angelo (of Nitro), Joseph Galletta, Loren Robinson, and others. The album was an instant hit, and the band played atLondon s famed Marquee in August 1988.cite book |last=Hale |first=Mark |title=Headbangers |year=1993 |publisher=Popular Culture, Ink |location=Ann Arbor,Michigan |edition=First edition, second printing |isbn=1-56075-029-4 |chapter=2646 Shout |pages=316] Following this release Tamplin hired Galletta and Robinson, who he had played with in Joshua, on a full time basis. These three members would form the long term core of the band. Chuck King (ofIdle Cure ) also became an integral part of the band. The band achieved early success in Europe and toured there in August 1988.cite journal |last=Newcomb |first=Brian Quincy |year=1988 |month=October |title=Notebook: Shout It Out!! |journal=CCM Magazine |id=ISSN|1524-7848 |volume=11 |issue=4 |pages=10 ]Their second album, "In Your Face", sold 40,000 copies within a month of its release.cite journal |last=Milette |first=Dn |year=
1989 |month=August |title=A SHOUT for Mortality |journal=CCM Magazine |id=ISSN|1524-7848 |volume=12 |issue=2 |pages=17 ] The album was said to express "every nuance and shade of loudness and fastness". The lead single, "In Your Face", won theDove Award for hard music song in 1990.cite web |url=http://www.doveawards.com/history/browse.cfm?year=1990 |title=Dove Award Recipients for 1990 |accessdate=2007-03-01 |publisher=Gospel Music Association ]The band dissolved in 1989 due to primairily two issues: the "inability of Chrcistian music to financially support artists" despite having sold in excess of 100,000 albums by that time, and a lawsuit over naming rights, where Tamplin was held to have the right to record under the name Shout, but an east coast band had the right to perform with it.cite journal |last=Van Pelt |first=Doug |year=
1990 |month=September |title=Tamplin's Got An Axe To Grind |journal=CCM Magazine |id=ISSN|1524-7848 |volume=13 |issue=3 |pages=22-23 ] Tamplin went on to pursue a solo career. Two compilations were issued before Tamplin reformed the band. New material was issued in their 1999 release, "Shout Back".Discography
