Aikido Schools of Ueshiba

Aikido Schools of Ueshiba is an aikido organization founded by Mitsugi Saotome upon moving from Japan to the United States in 1975. ASU's original head dojo was the Aikido Shobukan Dojo in Washington, DC, however the center of gravity has shifted south as Saotome has retired to Myakka City, Florida.

The School

The ASU is different from other school of Aikido because it contains in it Saotome Sensei's Aiki-Niken or Two sword forms, which he developed form his study of European sword and dagger training. Saotome sensei developed them after a encounter with O-Sensei,Mr. Saotome was reading The book of five rings one day and O-sensei was passing by and asked him " do you understand that ?' pointing to the book, Saotome said "no Sensei" which O-sensei then said "Nither do I, but you should think about that." and walked off, this lead Saotome Sensei to consider and work on developing his Aiki-NiKen techniques now taught in the ASU schools.

The school is also different in the way it teaches, Mr. Saotome has (like many others) grouped the teaching of O-sensei together in his own way, and while teaching the way of peace, Saotome also gives you the actual Martial application of the techniques, and focuses on making a connection to the other persons point or center and maintaining that connection thru the whole technique. The ASU is also a federation connecting more than 90 dojos throughout North America. Although not associated with the Aikikai Hombu Dojo initially, official recognition was later established. Heir apparent to Saotome's position as chief instructor is Hiroshi Ikeda of the Boulder Aikikai.
