Beck began his collegiate career at West Virginia in 1979 as a freshman. Beck saw time as a backup, recording 310 yards and a touchdown his freshman year.
As a sophomore, in 1980, Beck's playing time decreased as star back Robert Alexander posted big numbers as the starter. Beck only rushed for 70 yards on 18 carries that season.
As a junior in 1981, Beck became the starter with the departure of Alexander. Beck led the team with 497 yards and two touchdowns, and also recorded 127 receiving yards.
In 1982, Beck's final season collegiately, Beck fought out newcomer
Ron Wolfley for the starting job. Although Wolfley and Beck shared considerable time, Beck posted a 357 yard and 3 touchdown season rushing, adding a touchdown receiving as well.Personal
