Weedgie

Weedgie

Weedgie or Weegie is a name used by some to refer to people from Glasgow in Scotland. It is a contraction of the much more formal "Glaswegian", an adjective referring to people from Glasgow.

An informal and, to some, insulting term in Scotland, it can be heard regularly on radio stations such as Talk 107 or in the books of Irvine Welsh although it is too colloquial to be read in 'quality' newspapers such as "The Scotsman" or "The Herald."

Other (polite) alternatives in Scotland referring to geographical areas include 'Glasgow' (as an adjective) and 'West of Scotland' (also as an adjective) which confusingly refers more to inland Glasgow and its satellite towns than it does coastal towns. Even Coatbridge which is directly in the centre of Scotland is known as 'West of Scotland.'
