The Vancouver Foundation is Canada's largest community foundation. It was established in 1943 as a community endowment fund to benefit the lives of British Columbians. Today, it manages about $800 million in endowment funds, and in 2006, distributed about $40 million to communities. Besides managing funds for individual donors, agenices and corporations, it also works with community advisors to select and distribute grants in the fields of: arts and culture; animal welfare; children, youth and families; education; environment; health and social development; health and medical research; and youth leadership. History

The Vancouver Foundation has its roots in the 1940s with a $1,000 dollar bequest made by Alice G. McKay, a Vancouver secretary who saved money from her pay-packet in order to help break the cycle of poverty in Vancouver. Inspired by this gift, a local businessman, W.J. VanDusen, established the foundation in 1943 with 10,000 dollars of his own. Further, Van Dusen persuaded nine other families to match his gift of $10,000.

The 101,000 dollars has now grown into a major charitable force with an endowment of roughly $800 million. [ [http://www.vancouverfoundation.bc.ca/AboutVancouverFoundation/about.shtml Vancouver Foundation | Letter of Intent ] ] .
