Center for effective School Practices

The Center for Effective School Practices (CESP) features innovative, research-based initiatives that have been field-tested to improve pre-K through 12+ classroom and school organizational practices and advance achievement for all students. CESP programs emphasize student attainment of State and National Content Standards as well as the preparation of lifelong learners who will be productive members of society.

Recognizing the vital role of the school leader, CESP offers initiatives to address leadership training and mentorship of new, veteran and aspiring principals. Technical assistance, professional development and special programs are available in a variety of areas. CESP emphasizes action research, as well as formative and summative evaluation of programs. We also focus on community and parental involvement in schools.

The Center comprises regional or state operations for the following nationally recognized programs: Coalition of Essential Schools, National School Reform Faculty (Critical Friends Groups), and California's Buck Institute's Project and Problem-Based Learning Initiative.

CESP houses The Academy for Teaching and Learning (ATL), the New Jersey Charter School Resource Center (CSRC), and a Small Schools Initiative.

The CESP team of professionals working in schools includes veteran educators from the New Jersey area. They have served as administrators, lead teachers, and university faculty. The team has over 500 collective years of experience leading schools, guiding reform and implementing best practices.

CESP is a unit of the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education and is strengthened by the ability to draw upon the expertise of Rutgers faculty.
