forces.
Details
He was 30 years old, and a surgeon in the
90th Foot ,British Army during theIndian rebellion of 1857 when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.On 26 September 1857 at
Lucknow ,India , Surgeon Home was in charge of the wounded men left behind when the troops forced their way into the Residency. The escort left with the wounded had been reduced, by casualties, to a small party, who with the wounded, were forced into a house which they defended until it was set on fire. They then retreated to a shed nearby and defended this for more than 22 hours until relieved. At last only six men with Surgeon Home in charge, remained to fire, and the fact that the wounded were safe and the defence was successful was mainly attributable to his brave conduct throughout.
