21 February ,1863 ) Born inGlenavy ,County Antrim , Samuel Hill, was an Irish recipient of theVictoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.He was about 31 years old, and a
sergeant in the90th Regiment (laterThe Cameronians - Scottish Rifles ), of theBritish Army during theIndian Mutiny when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.On 16 and
17 November 1857 atLucknow ,India , Sergeant Hill went with a major (John Christopher Guise ) to save the life of a captain at the storming of the Secundra Bagh and also went in under heavy fire to help two wounded men. In fact he acted with gallantry throughout the operations for the relief of the Lucknow garrison.He was killed in action,
Meerut , India, on21 February 1863 .Elected by the Regiment.
