Next single = "Roxanne" (1979)"Fall Out" was the first single released by the
The Police . It was originally released in May of1977 and then re-released in 1979. "Fall Out" was a 7" single with "Nothing Achieving" on its B-side. Although it did not appear on any studio albums, it has appeared on a number of compilation and live albums including "" and "The Police Live!".Red Hot Chili Peppers front-manAnthony Kiedis has stated that he and future bandmateFlea used to get stoned to this song which helped contribute to their lengthy addictions.Development and production
"Fall Out" was written and produced by drummer
Stewart Copeland , and was one of the first songs Copeland presented to vocalist and bassist Sting when The Police were forming. It is one of the only Police recordings featuring original guitaristHenry Padovani along with Sting and Copeland. Although Padovani is credited as the guitarist for the song, Copeland has stated that he recorded most of the guitar track himself and Padovani only recorded the solo. Copeland has also commented that he put a lot of personal energy into the song, including the actual packaging of the 7" singles.Release
"Fall Out" was released on the Illegal Records label, which is part of the
Faulty Products group of companies owned by Copeland's brother Miles. Copeland estimates that the single sold mostly because it was a part of the overall punk movement of the time; the band appears in the cover photograph in clothes that were fashionable at the time and fans of the punk movement were buying any punk single that came out.Music publications in the UK rated "Fall Out" among other punk singles of the time and it did not receive any exceptional reviews. It failed to chart on its original release, but when re-released in 1979 it made number 47 on the
UK Singles Chart , two months after "Message in a Bottle" reached number one.Track listing
