Zrenjanin Cathedral of the
Saint John of Nepomuk is the supreme Catholic church in Serbian Banat, underRoman Catholic Diocese of Zrenjanin . It is located at theZrenjanin main square (Liberty Square).History
During Ottoman rule (1552-1718) a mosque standed at its place. Previous church was built in 1768 in the
Baroque style. After hundred years, church was in very bad condition. It was decided that church should be pulled down and new, larger church should be built at the same place. Construction works started in 1864 by the project of Stevan Đorđević, and were finished in 1868.Features
The Zrenjanin Cathedral was built in the
Romanic style. Interior was decorated by Josef Goigner fromTyrol . There are organs which were made inTimişoara in 1907. Altar windows are made of stained glass.Because Zrenjanin Cathedral is the biggest church in Zrenjanin, it can be seen from many parts of the city.
