Martínez started his professional career with
Defensor Sporting Club in 1986. In 1991 he moved to Urugauyan giantsC.A. Peñarol , switching toArgentina in 1992, withBoca Juniors . In his five years with Boca he won the "Apertura " in 1992 and theCopa de Oro in 1993. He was topscorer in the "Apertura" 1993 with 12 goals and in the "Clausura " 1997 with 15. He currently ranks seventh in the club's professional era topscorers list, with 86 goals in 167 games (all competitions).In January 1998, Martínez moved to
Spain to play forDeportivo de La Coruña (3 league matches played), before returning to native Uruguay to finish his career atClub Nacional de Football .International career
In 1995 Martínez helped Uruguay to win the Copa América scoring the decisive penalty in the shootout against Brazil in the final.
