Liverpool ,England ) is a former defender with Liverpool in 1989 and won theFA Cup with their rivals Everton in 1995.Playing career
Liverpool
Ablett joined the
Anfield club as an apprentice on leaving school in 1982, but didn't make his first-team debut until the 1986-87 season, by which time he was 21 years old. He also spent some time on loan at Derby County and Hull City as an exercise in grooming him for regular first-team football. When first-choice defenders
Mark Lawrenson andBarry Venison were ruled out by injury, Ablett was called into the first team by managerKenny Dalglish , making his debut on 20 December 1986 in the 0-0 league draw with Charlton Athletic atSelhurst Park . He responded with such a polished and composed run of displays that he stayed in the side for the rest of the season, with Venison missing out and Lawrenson eventually leavingAnfield for Oxford United.Ablett scored his only goal for the club during the 1986-87 season; it came on 18 April in the 3-0 league victory over Nottingham Forest at
Anfield . Alongside experienced players in defence likeGary Gillespie ,Steve Nicol and skipperAlan Hansen , Ablett settled confidently into the team as Liverpool won the League championship and reached theFA Cup final in 1987-88. Ablett only collected a runners-up medal in theFA Cup due to Liverpool's shock 1-0 defeat by Wimbledon. At Wembley, Ablett was one of Liverpool's better players on a day when their standards slipped, and they were beaten 1-0 by Wimbledon and missed out on
the double .He missed only 3 league games of the 1988-89 season, but was said to have been deeply affected by the
Hillsborough disaster as a local lad. The tragedy took place at theFA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989. 94 fans died that day, with the final death toll rising to 96.He and his team-mates retained their professionalism to help Liverpool to success in the FA Cup with a 3-2 win over fierce
Merseyside rivals Everton. However, they dramatically lost the League title to Arsenal with practically the last kick of the season.Ablett flitted in and out of the squad over the next year, relegated in the pecking order following the arrival of
Glenn Hysen and the progress ofSteve Staunton . Ablett was used more frequently as a central defender rather than left full back after Hansen began suffering more with injuries. Eventually he took the central role more often following the arrival of left back David Burrows from West Bromwich Albion and won the League again with Liverpool in 1990.Everton
Dalglish resigned on 22 February 1991 and his successor
Graeme Souness decided to sell Ablett for £750,000 to local-rivals Everton in January 1992, after 147 appearances for the Reds Ablett moved across Stanley Park to the Blue half of Merseyside. He made his league debut on 19 January 1992 in the 1-1 draw withNottingham Forest atGoodison Park . Ablett was a sturdy and regular defender who helped keep Everton in the Premiership in May 1994, when he played in the 3-2 victory against Wimbledon on the final day of the season, and who won theFA Cup again in 1995. He is the only player to win the FA Cup with both Merseyside teams.Later career
He went on to make 128 league appearances scoring 5 goals for the Toffees and later went on to have a brief loan spell with Sheffield United before making a permanent move to Birmingham City for £390,000, he was an integral part of their defence alongside former Manchester United defender and future Blues chief
Steve Bruce .Ablett was released by then-Birmingham-boss
Trevor Francis in 1999, and after short spells with Blackpool under former Anfield team-mateSteve McMahon and Wycombe Wanderers, signed for American A-League sideLong Island Rough Riders in June 2000. In February 2002, at the age of 36, Ablett was taken on trial by Division One strugglers Grimsby Town.Coaching career
In the summer of 2002 Gary moved into coaching taking up a post as the coach of Everton's under-17 side. He worked as part of the club's youth academy for several years until the summer of 2006 when he returned to his first club, taking the vacant job of
Liverpool F.C. Reserves team coach, replacingPaco Herrera . Ironically, Ablett was replaced at Everton by another former player of both Merseyside clubs, Kevin Sheedy. In April 2008, under Ablett's guidance, Liverpool reserves were crowned champions of the Premier Reserve League North and in May they were crowned national champions after a play-off final against Aston Villa reserves. In July 2008 he completed his final UEFA coaching qualification by obtaining theUEFA Pro License .
