William Stemmeyer (May 6, 1865 – May 3, 1945) born in Cleveland, Ohio was a Pitcher for the Boston Beaneaters (1885-87) and Cleveland Blues (1888).

He led the National League in Strikeouts/9IP (6.17) and Wild Pitches (63) in 1886 and Saves (1) in 1887. His 63 Wild Pitches in 1886 is still the highest single-season total in the history of Major League Baseball.

In 4 seasons he had a 29-29 Win-Loss record, 60 Games (59 Started), 59 Complete Games, 1 Shutout, 1 Game Finished, 1 Save, 495 Innings Pitched, 482 Hits Allowed, 374 Runs Allowed, 202 Earned Runs Allowed, 15 Home Runs Allowed, 205 Walks, 295 Strikeouts, 7 Hit Batsmen, 79 Wild Pitches, 2,228 Batters Faced, 3.67 ERA and 1.388 WHIP.

He died in his hometown days before his 80th birthday.
