Angolan legislative election, 1992

Angolan legislative election, 1992

In September 1992, Angola held the first multi-party election in the history of Angola. Several parties competed for seats in the National Assembly. A total of 12 parties won seats, with the ruling MPLA winning nearly 54% of the total votes and 129 seats out of 200. The rebel group turned political party UNITA won 70 seats. Immediately after the election, UNITA's leader Jonas Savimbi rejected the results and began his group's insurgency against the government.
