Mills High School students who design and participate in building a robot each year to compete in the F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition sponsored by NASA. The team consists of three departments, a construction department, an animation department, and a public relations department.History and awards
Four talented and motivated high school students founded the Mills Robotics Team in 1997 as Team Themis. The team in 1998-1999 changed its name to the Mills Robotics Team. For three consecutive years, the team has been the recipient of the Judges’ Award at the NASA Silicon Valley Regional Autodesk Visualization Award in 2004 for an outstanding animation. Mills High School is the first school in its district that has a team participating in this international event.
Construction Department
The Construction Department is primarily responsible for the construction of the robot. This work includes design, assembly, software programming, and operation at F.I.R.S.T. comeptitions.
Animation Department
The Animation Department is tasked with creating a thirty second 3D animation to compete in the
Autodesk animation portion of the competition. Autodesk designates a new theme for each year's competition and provides a copy of 3D Studio MAX for each team's use.Theme of animation2006 - "How F.I.R.S.T. Inspires You"2007 - "Thinking Green"
Public Relations department
The Public Relations Department is in charge of managing the team, raising funds, gathering resources, and most importantly, interfacing with people outside the team.
While each group has their own separate function. The Mills Robotics Team works as a whole to achieve our mission: to learn more about robotics, engineering, and technology and improve at each year's F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition.
