Ryan Wilhelm was the former owner and creator of PC-Workshop, and author of several articles for Ars Technica. He created the first laser etched case windows, the SLURP (temperature monitoring unit) and the first artistic acrylic fan covers for computer cases.

Biography

Importance

Ryan "Spiv" Wilhelm was a former author of reviews for Ars Technica, and former forum moderator. Wilhelm owned the now defunct websites PC-Workshop.net and PC-Windows.net, which made its way into several magazines including MaximumPC (page 52, August 2001 issue). PC-Workshop was noted as one of the original websites devoted to the fine art of modifying computer cases "beyond boring beige." Wilhelm is also credited with created the original "PC-Windows," or etched plexi-glass frames in conjunction with another Ars Technica member (known as Jessica, no last name known). PC-Workshop, and its authors, are credited with stretching the imagination of the earliest computer case modifiers through its unique brand of creativity and craftsmanship. Ryan Wilhelm specifically is credited with the invention of the first laser etched case windows, the SLURP (temperature monitoring unit) and the first artistic acrylic fan covers for computer cases.

Controversy

Wilhelm suddenly disappeared in May 2004 with little explanation. PC-Workshop's customers with open orders were refunded their money and never received further notification. PC-Workshop.net and its sister website disappeared shortly thereafter, taking with them a number of high traffic articles, tutorials and of course all products and services that were offered. Attempts to contact Mr. Wilhelm regarding the disappearance, or even purchase of articles, have been unsuccessful.
