National Cancer Act of 1971

The National Cancer Act of 1971, dubbed the "War on Cancer" [cite web | url=http://dtp.nci.nih.gov/timeline/noflash/milestones/M4_Nixon.htm | title=Summary of the National Cancer Act at the National Cancer Institute website] , is a United States federal law enacted in 1971. The act was intended "to amend the Public Health Service Act so as to strengthen the National Cancer Institute in order more effectively to carry out the national effort against cancer". Progress in the war on cancer

Though there has been significant progress in the biological understanding of and treatment of certain cancers since the inception of the National Cancer Act of 1971, cancer remains a major cause of death nearly four decades later.
