Aryeh Mekel

Ambassador Arye Mekel is an Israeli diplomat and journalist who served as the Consul General^[1] of Israel in New York (until August 2007).

The child of Holocaust survivors and a former director General of The Israel Broadcasting Authority and radio correspondent and editor, Ambassador Mekel served as Foreign Policy Advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and as Director General of the Israel Broadcasting Authority. Among other prominent positions, Amb. Mekel served as Consul General of Israel to the Southeastern United States,based in Atlanta, Director of the Government's Media Center during the peak of the latest wave of terrorism in Israel (2000–2002), and Deputy Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations. In December 2007, Mekel was appointed Spokesman of the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs,^[2] replacing Mark Regev.He served as Deputy Director General for Cultural and Scientific Affairs,at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem(2008–2010). As of September 2010 he serves as the Ambassador of Israel to Greece

Mekel holds degrees from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Columbia University in NY.He served as an adjunct professor of Judaic Studies at the University of Cincinnati(Ohio).
