Giro (company)

Giro is a U.S. manufacturer of helmets for cycling and snow sports. The company was founded in 1985 by Jim Gentes and is headquartered in Santa Cruz, CA.

The Giro Atmos and the Bell Alchera are among the first bicycle helmets to use carbon fiber to increase strength without increasing weight. The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team uses only specially made Giro Atmos helmets in all races and competitions including the Tour de France. Carbon fiber is regularly much more expensive than traditional helmets, and is for that reason less popular among low budget cyclists.

Livestrong Giro Atmos

Giro teamed up with the Discovery Channel in early 2007 to release a special Livestrong edition of Giro's best selling, road cycling helmet: the Giro Atmos. 5% of Atmos sales from the Discovery Channel store benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and the helmet comes in a regular black and yellow Livestrong style with the Livestrong logo found on bracelets and cycling jerseys.

Giro is part of Bell Sports, which is headquartered in Rantoul, Illinois. Dozens of helmet models are produced under both brands, with the bulk of the manufacturing being carried out in China.
