John Anthony Steele, better known as Tony Steele, is a first class cricketer who played 15
Sheffield Shield matches forNew South Wales from 1968/69 to 1970/71. He toured New Zealand with an Australian party in 1969/70, playing 3 matches for Australia B against New Zealand and 3 for the Australians against domestic first class teams. His games againstNew Zealand do not count as Test Matches although New Zealand fielded their full strength Test team. [ "The Complete Illustrated History of Australian Cricket" by Jack Pollard (Viking Press, 1995) states at p. 437: "An Australian 'B' team returned this visit by playing eight matches in New Zealand in February and March 1970, under the captaincy of Sam Trimble. The Australian team was S. C. Trimble, G. S. Chappell, G. R. Davies, A. Turner, R. J. Inverarity, G. D. Watson, J. A. Steele, J. A. MacLean, D. Chadwick, T. J. Jenner, D.A. Renneberg, A. L. Thomson, D. K. Lillee and K. J. O'Keeffe."]A right handed batsman, he appeared in 22 first class matches in all between 1968 and 1971, scoring 1,168 runs at 36.5 with three hundreds against Queensland (158), South Australia (152) and Western Australia (123). He also scored 5 fifties and took 27 catches and, as an occasional wicket keeper, completed 2 stumpings. He scored 10 in his only List A match.
He also played for New South Wales Colts in the 1966/67 season and appeared for a Tasmania Combined XI in a first class match in 1970/71. He was born on November 13, 1942 in
Waverley ,Sydney ,New South Wales and educated atNorth Sydney Boys High School .References
