Knudsen was born in
Saltrød nearArendal to Christen and Guro Knudsen. The family later bought the farm Frednes inEidanger in 1854, and moved there. Gunnar Knudsen had one brother Jørgen Christian and one sister Elen Serine, married Jeremiassen.
