Gunnar Knudsen

Gunnar Knudsen (born Aanon Gunerius Knudsen on 19 September 1848, Saltrød - 1 December 1928, Skien) was a Norwegian politician from the Liberal Party.

He was Prime Minister of Norway from 1908 to 1910 and from 1913 to 1920, for a total of 9 years, 3 months and 4 days.

He also owned a number of shipping companies, and created the Borgestad corporation.

Personal life

Knudsen was born in Saltrød near Arendal to Christen and Guro Knudsen. The family later bought the farm Frednes in Eidanger in 1854, and moved there. Gunnar Knudsen had one brother Jørgen Christian and one sister Elen Serine, married Jeremiassen. Gunnar Knudsen married Anna Sofie Cappelen in 1880, and together they had five children, born between 1882 and 1893; Erik, Christen, Gudrun, Margit and Rolf. Christen Knudsen had a son Knut Andreas Knudsen who became a politician as well.
