University of Kuopio, 26. September 2007. fi] ] is a new University being built from two current Universities in Eastern Finland.

Ongoing reform in Finnish University legislation will affect the process. The reform will transform Universities legal status from entities under the State Budget to an independent body corporate. Locations

Two main campuses, in Joensuu and Kuopio. One smaller campus in Savonlinna (currently a part of the University of Joensuu).

Main campuses are located some 100 kilometers apart and Savonlinna campus is located some 200 kilometers from both of them.

Administration

Government consisting of elected staff, student and administrative representatives and an administrative centre will control the University of Eastern Finland.

First step towards the new University will be forming of joint faculties in Economics and Natural Sciences between the University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio.

The University of Eastern Finland will have a staff of 2,900 and 14,000 students. The annual budget will be some 200 million euros.

It will be the fourth biggest University in Finland based on masters theses (ca. 1,300 per year), third biggest with the amount of funding, published international referee and domestic articles.
