Li Xiaoyao

Li Xiaoyao

Li Xiaoyao (zh-tsp|t=李逍遙|s=李逍遥|p= xiāo yáo) is the male protagonist in the Chinese RPG game franchise The Legend of Sword and Fairy (zh-tsp|t=仙劍奇俠傳|s=仙剑奇侠传|p=xiān jiàn xiá zhuàn), and the 2004 TV series (acted by 胡歌 Hu Ge)aired in China based on the original RPG game.

Character History

Li helped his aunt manage the only inn in their small fishing village near Suzhou until he was 19 years old. Through a series of events, he befriended Zhao Ling'er, a sorceress in training, and set on a journey to help her re-establish order in her warring birth nation in Southwest China.

In later sequels to the game, Li assumes the role of the leader of the powerful martial arts faction Shu-Shan Sword, as he demonstrated amazing talent and skill on his quest, and he was trained by one of the co-leaders of the faction when he was still an ordinary citizen.

Charateristics

Zhao is the fairy of the story and she appears rather physically weak from the start of the story to the end. Her real form is a snake like her mother who is the Queen of the people of Miao. And herself the princess who the "black Miao" people seeks from the start of the story. She is a polite person unlike Lin Yueru. She doesn't say anything when Li Xiaoyao was made to marry Lin but only cries in her room. In the TV series, she even tell Lin that she will give up Li and so that Lin can be with Li.

Relationships

He discovered the location of Zhao's exile, and was forced to marry Zhao by her grandmother. He lost all the memory of what happened on the island in acquiring the medicine for his aunt as he was tricked in taking a strange potion. His aunt makes him go with Zhao to the Southwest to find her mother and ask for a proper marriage, thus began his journey.

On the way, he met Lin Yueru during a martial arts contest, the daughter of a respected family faction, both in martial arts and politics. Lin proved to be very arrogant even when she lost to Li. However, Li unknowingly won the contest and was granted the privilege of marrying Lin, much to the dismay of Zhao, but she kept her feelings inside.

Zhao leaves the two of them in order to protect them, but was captured by the leader of the Shu-Shan Sword as a demon to be locked up in the Demon Prison forever until they slowly dissolve away. Li and Lin rescues Zhao, who was in her true form, reminded Li of his lost memories and that he and Zhao were pledged in marriage. The 3 of them sworn to stay true to each other out of love and friendship, but Lin was mortally wounded while they were on their way out of the Demon Prison.

The leader of the Shu-Shan Sword takes them to the care of a traditional medicine guru near the city of present day Dali in southwest China. Li alone was able to move around freely, having been the least injured. He took up the task of helping the guru find rare herbs to help a pregnant Zhao recover and even rarer herbs to revive the near death Lin. He encountered A Nu, the daughter of the chief of the White Miao people, who also happened to be an apprentice under the medicine guru. The two of them develop a loving bond. When Zhao is back to full strength, the three of them is determined to end the decade-long civil war that has plagued the land and the people, and to put and end to the leader of the Cult of Moon Worshippers.

In the final epic battle, Zhao sacrificed her life and restored order to the land, ending the looming catastrophe. A Nu took up the leadership of her people, and Lin awaited for Li on his return, with Li and Zhao's newborn daughter Li Yiru.

Critiques

Li's character is the representation of Justice, he is attractive, assertive and witty, yet not lecherous. He is always ready to lend a hand to the weak and poor. He can be compared to Robin Hood on some levels.

Li Xiao Yao was portrayed by Hu Ge in the Chinese TV adaption. Many true loyal fans of the game disliked Li Xiao Yao's personality as it was changed dramatically.
