"The Howling" was released by Dutch rock band Within Temptation on May 1, 2007 exclusively at Hot Topic stores in the United States. After only being available for a few hours, the EP had already sold out on the Hot Topic website and the listing is no longer available on the site as of May 2.

The other four tracks on the EP are popular tracks (#2, 3 and 5 are the singles) from Within Temptation's third studio album, The Silent Force. The disc is also an Enhanced CD which contains the video for "What Have You Done".

The music video for "The Howling" by Within Temptation begins with the lead singer, Sharon Den Adel in a beautiful, sunlit field. A butterfly lands on Sharon den Adel’s hand while the music is soft and calm. Once the music goes into a more Metal form, the butterfly on Sharon’s hand forms into a black scorpion and the sunshiny scene goes dark into a cloudy sky with ravens flying in it. A girl with blonde, curly hair that was shown at the beginning of the music video holding a baby doll was now standing in the back of the dark scene without the doll. A dead raven lies in the field of burnt black wood. The small girl pokes the dead raven’s body with a stick. Later in the video, the black scorpion shown earlier is seen crawling on the baby doll’s face as the doll is lying on a pile of soot. Soon after this scene is the sunny field once again with Sharon as she sees the girl swinging on a wooden swing, still holding the baby doll. Behind Sharon den Adel lies a tall red door which opens revealing the girl with black soot all over her face, hair, skin, and dress, walking towards the opening of the door towards the soot covered doll lying in the opening of the door. The girl picks up the doll and clutches it to her chest. The girl then looks at Sharon for about a split second. The girls face is scrunched up as if too much sunlight is shining on her face. Sharon walks into the dark world where her own self is wearing a black dress resembling the dress of the goddess of the ravens singing with the band while the instruments are being played behind her.
