Shailer Mathews (
May 26 ,1863 –October 23 ,1941 ) was a liberalChristian theologian , involved with theSocial Gospel movement.Born in
Portland, Maine , Mathews was progressive in his day, advocating social concerns as part of theGospel message, and subjecting Biblical texts to scientific study, in opposition to contemporaryconservative Christian s. He incorporatedevolution ary theory into his religious views, stating that the two were not mutually exclusive. A prolific author, Mathews also served as dean of the Divinity School of theUniversity of Chicago . An endowed chair in his honor, the Shailer Mathews Professorship of ReligiousEthics , is currently held byFranklin I. Gamwell .References
