Viking Dragonfly

Viking Dragonfly

The Viking Dragonfly is an aircraft inspired by the Rutan/Weaver Quickie. It has two wings as does a biplane except the lower wing is forward of the flight cabin and the upper wing is aft of the flight cabin. Pitch control (plain flaps) is on the front wing; the aft wing serves as horizontal stabilizer and supports ailerons for roll control. Dragonflies have been built with three different landing gear configurations. Dragonfly Mark I main landing gear is on the tips of the front lower wing, with a tail wheel extanding aft of the rudder. Dragonfly Mark II moves the main wheels inboard to near half-span. Viking Aircraft sold drawings and landing gear legs to attach under the canard. There is also a Mark II H version. "H" stands for "hoopstyle" landing gear,an cessna 172-like gear attached to the bottom of the fuselage. Dragonfly Mark III is the only nosewheel version, with main wheels bolted to sprung struts that exit the fuselage just aft of the cockpit.

Data from Kitplanes magazine, January 2001, which quoted advertising from Viking, which sells Dragonfly plans and parts.
