National Black Political Assembly

National Black Political Assembly

The first National Black Political Assembly was held on March 10, 1972 in Gary, Indiana. Three thousand delegates, along with five thousand other African Americans attended that day. The winner included the radical black nationalists, while those who supported the Democrats, and integration lagged behind.

Win or lose, most delegates believed that the African American society was politically and economically troubled and that big changes were needed to improve their lives. This political assembly pushed for African Americans to forget about integration and begin to think about fighting for themselves. Independent black politics would be at the top of their agenda.
